Today is a big day for gaming. It marks the beginning of a transfer to the next generation of consoles, with that news also comes some unexpected news from our friends Bungie, the creators of Halo!

After weeks of speculation, Sony officially unveiled its next console from a live event in New York today: the PlayStation 4. The console will be released this holiday season.

Sony's Andrew House said the new console will create "experiences that surpass gamers' wildest expectations."

Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers." Cerny has a history in the video game industry dating back more than 30 years, first with Atari and later companies like Sega of Japan and Universal Interactive Studios.

Cerny said the platform is "by game creators for game creators" and that its architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." PS4 uses the X86 CPU and has 8GB of memory and a local hard drive. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memory, which is typically reserved for "top of the line, high end graphics cards."

The pillars of PS4 are Simple, Immediate, Social, Integrated and Personalized. PlayStation 4 supports suspending and reloading play sessions. The console has a secondary chip for uploading and downloading in the background. Digital games can be played as they are being downloaded.

The system supports seamless uploads of gameplay, spectating friends' gameplay sessions in real time as well as integrated chat. Players will have profile pages like Facebook integrated to the "full PlayStation ecosystem."

Activision called Destiny the first "shared-world shooter." PlayStation 4 will receive exclusive playable content, with details to follow "in the coming months."

With Destiny coming to the Playstation and Halo going down the toilet, I see no reason to buy the next Xbox. I'm assuming Microsoft will continue to provide Xbox Live for a monthly fee while Sony will continue their free service. This is due to Microsofts focus on being everything but a competitive console. They provide music, movies, Bing, ESPN, and tons of other shit that I'd rather NOT pay for, and then fail to offer anything for gaming itself.

I'm also assuming that the next Xbox will be mostly focused on the casual gamer, with Kinect release titles and Xbox Characters with stupid micro transactions for different pixels on your avatar. Playstation doesn't seem to be buying into this crap as much. Watch the announcement trailer for the next Xbox have a perfect family with 3 kids standing infront of a TV jumping, twirling, bending over, and having a blast with their new copy of Kinectimals 2!

As you can see, this is almost 100% assumptions, so I could be completely wrong.

We'll have to wait and see what the next Xbox has in store, but right now Sony's looking like it will be the frontrunner...

I'm not a big fan of Playstation, but I'm looking flowered to the PS 4.

Yeah, it's a little too early to assume you won't be into the new Xbox. Remember that the PS3 started out as the superior console when the last next-gen consoles were being announced. I vividly remember everyone saying that Xbox was done and finished. Sony would take the reigns of gaming. It turned out that even though the 360's hardware wasn't as impressive as the Playstation 3's, it ended up being the superior console. The 360 even beats the PS3 on some graphics areas (i.e. lighting looks much better on the Xbox). Sony's announcement was pretty damn impressive. I can only speculate as to what Microsoft has in store for us, but honestly, I'd rather just have two really good systems with really good games to back them up. No way in hell am I buying a PS4 just for Destiny. I don't even know if Destiny is going to be good or not and I'm not going to just assume that it's going to be as good as we all hope it is. More than likely, I'll be getting it for the Xbox because there may also be unique Xbox content, too. Eventually, I'll probably end up buying both systems just like how I already have a 360 and a PS3. I just hope that developers make fun, playable games for the Playstation 4. This since we know that Microsoft already has a gajillion developers making games for the them.

Microsoft most likely shat their pants when Sony announced the PS4. They're probably going to speed up production to try to get it out in early 2014. Else it's a noob move. I expect the announcement at the E3.

Still going to get the new Xbox, regardless.

But either way, I am not looking to spend $500 on a stupid console. I have better things to spend that kind of money on...

I don't think I'll get a PS4, especially not straight away. All the multiplats come to PC anyway.
Don't think I'll be getting next gen xbox at all at this rate, unless they give me reasons to give up PC or if it's cheaper than the PS4 and has blu-ray.

I haven't got a new PlayStation console since the PlayStation 2. If I get the new one, that would be weird. I probably won't buy either of the new consoles, they're always too much money.

Lol I might get it. I've been a forger for years. I've tried to give it up several times (I even made a video about 2 years ago saying I was done making maps and videos) but I'm never able to.
